On average, Grand Haven Charter Township experiences between $32 and $40 million of new construction each year. The fees collected from these building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and zoning permits funds much of the operation of this department. The fees collected normally exceed $315,000 and are part of the Board’s commitment to ensure that developers pay the direct costs of any project proposed within the township.

Prior to expending monies on any major development, time should be spent with staff to ensure the project complies with the township’s Master Land Use Plan and Zoning Ordinance. 

Permits are required for all remodeling, including basements, additions, decks, fences, wood stoves, etc.  Contact the Building Department before you begin any construction project. Completing any building project without a permit will result in permit fees that are roughly twice as expensive as normal fees, could require certain construction work to be "opened" to verify that it meets building and safety codes, and could result in court action.

Moreover, you are at risk of allowing substandard work if your construction project is not inspected.
